Milo’s Story

I came to BLC to escape the rigid standardized public school system, which did not allow me to delve deeply into the topics I love. BLC gives me the flexibility and freedom to learn what I want to learn and how I go about learning it. This in conjunction with supportive staff and volunteers allows me to take the steps I find appropriate to endeavor further in researching these topics and to get a broad exposure of new information. All while being surrounded by a loving and supportive cohort of friends. The uniqueness of this institution allows for a great stepping stone to make my way to college, and my future desire to attend medical school.

Milo never fit the public school “mold”; it was pretty obvious from kindergarten all through elementary school. With a diagnosis of ADHD, we had a new IEP place every school year to make sure he was given as much educational flexibility as possible, and that worked for a while. As Milo matured, he continued to question everything… why all the busy work, why are things only taught one way, why are they not giving us all the facts and lying to us? This became frustrating for him, his teachers and us as parents. We knew we were going to have to find some other learning environment for Milo before his anxiety took over and learning no longer had any wonder left for him. We were all tired of trying to fit our very bright out of the box thinking square peg into the predetermined public school round hole. Luckily a close friend had researched BLC for one of their psychotherapy clients and thought the school was tailor made for Milo. We visited at the end of his 6th grade year and after time spent with faculty and students, he said “Oh yeah, this is happening”! We were thrilled that we finally found a place where Milo was comfortable, engaged, relaxed and received positive feedback for all of his intellectual curiosity. Milo is in his 5th year at BLC and couldn’t imagine not being a self directed learner. He has become a diligent student who pursues his interests and is eagerly anticipating college in a few years.
